Walker State Prison Welding Program Using Clean Air WeldStation To Help Give Second Chances

June 22, 2015

Clean Air America would like to congratulate the first graduating class from the Walker State Prison welding program.  Walker State worked with Clean Air America to bring the state-of-the-art WeldStation LEAF welding booth to their welding lab.  (13) Thirteen Clean Air WeldStation LEAF dual booths gave Walker State a total of 26 self-contained welding booths that keep their students safe while learning the art of welding.  One inmate who is up for parole in July said that he already has 2 job offers waiting for him showing that this program and ones like it are helping give inmates a second chance to learn a trade that is in high demand.

The program that started in August of 2014 is a 22 week course featuring 106 hours of lecture and 140 hours of hands on training inside of the lab that allows inmates who have completed their GED and are within 5 years of their release to obtain their welding certificate.  The time spent in the welding program allows the inmates to earn 13 credit hours from Central Georgia Tech that is transferable to any tech college within the Georgia Technical College System.  Now that this set of 33 students has graduated 52 participants are looking to follow in their footsteps to be the second class to come out of the program.
