Kilgore, TX Partners dedicate Dual-Credit Welding Lab

February 25, 2016

Kilgore College, Texas Workforce Commission and the Kilgore Economic Development Corporation join Kilgore ISD in dedicating a new dual-credit welding lab at Kilgore High School.

Based in Kilgore, Texas, Clean Air America customer Kilgore College was recently awarded a $217,050 Skills Development Fund job training grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.  The college also received an $80,000 gift from Kilgore Economic Development Corporation.

The TWC grant and the KEDC gift’s purpose is the completion of a dual-credit welding lab housed in a new building at nearby Kilgore High School.  It includes nine Clean Air America WeldStations™ that allow space for 18 students to weld simultaneously.  Students who successfully complete the courses are rewarded with high school credit, college credit, and industry training.  The dual-credit welding facility, located behind the main Kilgore High School building, features air compressors, torches and hand tools, and Clean Air America’s smokeless WeldStation™ work stations.

House Bill 5 (HB 5), passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013, made substantial changes to the state's curriculum and graduation requirements.  The bill allows students to choose pathways in high school with classes focused on those areas, and high schools can customize the available pathways to suit the community in which the students live.  For Kilgore ISD, that meant pairing up with the local community college so students could get a jump on technical education.  Dual-credit pathways are designed to prepare students for life after high school, whether that means jumping into industry work or following up with additional community college courses.
